A tribute to independent Singapore’s founding generation.

When Singapore became independent in 1965, close to 1 million people staked their future on the nation and registered as Singapore’s first citizens. Today, Founders' Memorial Singapore pays tribute to our founding generation through Project Citizen - The First Million, a year-long initiative that comprises a senior engagement programme, Project Citizen pop-ups and a creative showcase ‘Not Mere Spectators: The Makings of Multicultural Singapore’ at National Gallery Singapore.
Together, these initiatives call on us to reflect: What it meant to be a citizen when Singapore was just finding its footing. What thoughts, feelings and dilemmas did they face, and how did this conscious choice shape our identity and sense of belonging as a nation.
By capturing memories, sparking conversations, and bringing stories closer to the community, Project Citizens reminds us that our nation was built not only by leaders, but also by everyday people who embodied resilience, boldness and multiculturalism.
Project Citizens will find a permanent home at the Founders’ Memorial, when it opens in 2028.
