Highlights from PM Lawrence Wong's speech debate on the President's Address in Parliament on 24 September 2025

1️⃣ Enhance social mobility by broadening meritocracy and opening up opportunities to all

Recognising that people have different strengths and talents, a mindset shift is needed to widen definitions of success. More vocations will be professionalised and more pathways will be created so that no Singaporean is left behind. The Government is committed to helping every Singaporean – especially our young – realise their full potential.

2️⃣ Strengthen safety nets while energising the enterprise eco-system

The shift towards more pathways comes hand-in-hand with uplifting lives within a vibrant economy. In an increasingly fragmented global economy, more opportunities will be created for all Singaporeans through programmes like the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support Scheme and the ITE Progression Award. The government will also look into housing, healthcare, safety nets and retirement support, to ensure that all Singaporeans feel assured, supported and confident about the future. 

3️⃣ Build a “We-First” society where solidarity keeps us strong as one people

PM Wong highlighted the importance of nurturing our social fabric, where we interact with our neighbours from different cultures and backgrounds, and embrace our individuality while helping everyone be the best possible versions of themselves. Only then can we be greater than the sum of our parts. Through meaningful initiatives, such as Residents’ Networks and Youth Panels, we can foster interaction across demographics and provide platforms for dialogue.

Success is not just about what we achieve alone, but what we build together. True fulfilment comes from creating a society where every Singaporean can stand tall, and we can all move forward as one people.
