Chingay also holds special meaning in Malaysia, where it is similarly practised in Johor Bahru and Penang as important multicultural events. In March 2025, Singapore and Malaysia will jointly nominate Chingay onto the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as an SG60 milestone and as a joint effort with Malaysia to mark 60 years of bilateral ties. This nomination will mark a significant step in safeguarding and promoting this living heritage in both countries.
