Singapore's first Grand Prix in 1961
2 October 2025
Singapore’s Grand Prix story started long before the Marina Bay night races.
Our very first motor racing event zoomed off in 1961 at Upper Thomson Road, known then as the "Orient Year Grand Prix". It was part of a campaign to boost Singapore's tourism in the 1960s. From 1962 to 1965, it was called the Malaysian Grand Prix, but reverted to the Singapore Grand Prix by 1966 after independence.

The 1966 event was a big deal! Organised by the Ministry of Social Affairs, it was supported by brands like Omega and Rothmans, and graced by our first President and his First Lady. And who could forget those vintage cars and sports cars? 🤩 In the end, it was Singapore's very own Lee Han Seng who took the chequered flag, beating international pros! 🏆

This premier motorsport event in Southeast Asia ran for 7 thrilling years until 1973, when it ended due to safety concerns. From Upper Thomson's raw power to Marina Bay's dazzling spectacle, our Grand Prix story is nothing short of legendary.
