This year, Singapore marks 60 years since the National Pledge was first recited in schools on 24 Aug 1966.
Written at a time when Singapore needed to forge a common identity among a group of diverse people, the Pledge gave shape to the values Singapore would be built on: multiculturalism, democracy, justice, and equality. It reflected a deliberate choice that every community would have a stake in our nation, and that diversity would be a source of strength, not division.
As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Pledge, we honour not just the words but the generations of Singaporeans who have given them meaning through their choices and actions.
Singaporeans are invited to reflect on what the Pledge asks of us today, to deepen our shared national identity anchored in multiculturalism, and to strengthen our collective commitment to a "We First" society.
