Marsiling was named after Marsiling Villa, the residence of Teochew millionaire and pioneer Lim Nee Soon, (whose namesake is also used for a nearby town, Yishun). #FunFact: The name 'Marsiling' comes from Maxi Village in Chaozhou, China, and is Lim Nee Soon's ancestral village.
Over the years, Marsiling's reputation as a logistical and manufacturing hub grew as companies such as the Seiko Watch Factory, and the S$27 million headquarters of precision manufacturer Beyonics, set up shop in the area. Local supermarket chain Sheng Siong's first headquarters was also located in Marsiling.
Today, Marsiling Park lies on the old site of Marsiling Estate, one of Lim Nee Soon's many rubber plantations. The park has enriched the community in biodiversity education, with a restored mangrove ecosystem being home to locally endangered species, the Mangrove Dwarf dragonfly, as well as a butterfly-shaped playground surrounded by butterfly-attracting plants.
A town rich with pioneering spirit, economic growth and sustainability, the story of Marsiling is truly a Singapore Story.
